The Education Sector Celebrates the Life of Dr Soyisile Nuku

An extraordinary person and beacon of wisdom.

That is how Dr Soyisile Nuku, the late Eastern Cape Department of Education Acting Head was described during a memorial service in celebration of his life. The service was attended by Basic Education Minister, Angie Motshekga, his family, friends and colleagues. Dr Nuku passed away last Wednesday, 24 January 2024.

Dr Nuku retired from serving the education sector in 2022 but was recalled as the acting Head of Department (HoD) in the Eastern Cape Department of Education following the departure of Dr Naledi Mbude, who has since joined the Department of Basic Education (DBE).

Motshekga described the work of Dr Nuku as exceptional in academics and his profession. Praising his individual values and commitment, Motshekga spoke highly of the perseverance and determination of Dr Nuku in becoming the person that he was and his contribution to the education sector.

“His life indeed was rich in academic and professional accomplishment and served at the highest level with distinction and honour. It was not easy for the generation born in a world defiled with challenges to be anything,” she said.

She said that Dr Nuku used what was available and became a man of integrity and added that his contribution to the sector and achievements were a symbol of hope and resilience.

The Eastern Cape Education MEC, Fundile Gade encouraged the officials at the memorial service to continue and improve from where Dr Nuku left off. He highlighted that the improvement of the matric performance as well as other factors was because of the contribution of Dr Nuku made to the provincial education department.

“The provincial government has lost one of its own reliable allies. Let’s regroup and reorganize ourselves and put in more effort in ensuring that the tasks ahead of us is achieved. That is the best way we can usher a befitting sendoff for this giant,” he said.

There was a candlelight moment, presented by senior managers within the department as a sign of respect while Dr Nuku’s obituary was read out.

He will be laid to rest on Friday, 2 February 2024.
