Learners from Umthambeka Primary School in Tembisa, who are in Grade 6, have sustained injuries after their classroom’s ceiling collapsed earlier today.
It is not yet known what caused the incident which left approximately 18 learners injured while two are receiving medical attention at a local health facility.
The Gauteng Department of Education MEC, Matome Chiloane, expressed his concerns saying it is unfortunate that this happened at a school.
“We would like to wish all affected learners a speedy recovery. Furthermore, we call upon School Governing Body members to always be vigilant of challenges faced by their schools and report them to the department for necessary attention,” Chiloane said.
The department’s Psycho-Social Support Team will be dispatched to the school to conduct necessary counselling to those affected.
