Gauteng Learner Death Figures Increase to Four

The number of learners losing their lives in the Gauteng province keeps increasing as a fourth one has been reported today.

Learners in Oakdale Secondary School in Ennerdale, were allegedly involved in a stabbing incident that led to the death of a Grade 8 boy learner and left a Grade 10 learner injured. The deceased was allegedly stabbed outside the school premises before classes began.

The stabbing incident is allegedly a result of a fight that broke out among learners on Tuesday, 7 February 2024. According to a statement released by the Gauteng Department of Education, these incidents are influenced by learners in different schools in the area being part of gangsterism.

The province’s Education and Youth Development MEC, Matome Chiloane, passed his condolences to the family and the school community.

“No child must ever be harmed, especially in our school environment. As such, we call upon our law enforcement agencies to ensure justice prevails. Our thoughts are with the family of the deceased learner, as well as the learner who is currently recovering in hospital,” Chiloane said.

The department has sent their Psycho-Social Support Unit to provide counseling to those who witnessed the traumatic incident.
