The third term can be quite stressful for some learners, as it precedes the final exams. While some learners may be excited and satisfied thus far with their academic performance, others could still be struggling to reach their goals or improve their marks.
The Department of Basic Education has often urged parents to also play their part in ensuring learners study, do their homework, attend school every day, to ensure they receive the best marks. But how can this be achieved?
Award winning Maths Specialist in the North West Department Tebogo Mokwele shared the following tips on how parents and guardians can help their learners improve their performance before the end of the 2024 academic year:
- Create a strong relationship between your child and the teacher – Teachers can always advise parents on which strategies they can use to assist their children to study.
- Monitor your child’s daily study timetable: If the timetable says that they should study a certain subject at a particular time, parents must always ask for notes to see whether the learner is studying or not.
- Know the difference between homework and studying – Parents should differentiate between homework and studying, they are two different things.
- Always seek feedback from teachers – This is why it is important to have a relationship with the class teacher.
- Congratulate your child when they perform well – Acknowledge the good things that your child does, it will encourage them to keep trying harder.
- Seek private professional tutor classes – Seeking professional tutoring classes for your child helps. A professional tutor is a teacher or someone recognised by the Department of Basic Education.
- Refer your child to social media platforms that can help them with their schoolwork
- Parents must always maintain a healthy environment for their child’s mental health
