It’s been a devastating time for ten families as they remember the lives of their loved ones who tragically lost their lives earlier this week.
Families, friends and colleagues gathered at Senwabarwana Stadium in Limpopo on the 5th of June 2024, to remember and celebrate the lives of the teachers who were involved in a tragic accident that claimed 13 lives on 28 May 2024 on the R521 between Polokwane and Dendron.
Department of Basic Education Deputy Minister, Dr Reginah Mhaule, consoled the families during the memorial service and commended teachers for their excellent work and role in empowering learners. Mhaule pleaded with the families to take care of the children of the deceased teachers’ and support them through this tough time. Mhaule said that this is a great loss for the province and the department as a whole.
“Condolences also to the MEC of Education in Limpopo. I know that you are the chief mourner. Even if you lose one teacher it is sad, because replacing a teacher is hard. You cannot replace a skill especially if it is an experienced teacher, experience cannot be bought. We need that experience to teach learners and young teachers,” Mhaule said.
One of the family representatives from the Semenya family, Caisy Morwane, thanked the department for its support. She said that they are thankful for having experienced life with their loved ones and the impact they had in their lives.
“We are thankful for the support we have received. We were heartbroken but your support has helped us to rise and celebrate our loved one. We are thankful to the school for welcoming our child and working peacefully with her,” Morwane said.
Another family representative, Micheal Rangata, who represented the Tefu family, said that he is saddened by the tragic accident. He said that the support that the families have received since the day of the accident is well received. Rangata requested that participation from all departments, including the tribal council, to play a part in preventing such accidents from occurring.
“I request that pastors and traditional healers assist us in giving our beloved family members a dignified send off and making certain that they rest in peace,” Rangata said.
The families shared words of comfort quoting from the Bible.
