Every year, parents and caregivers across the country, generally face challenges with online school applications. If it is not the internet and connectivity issues, it’s the uploading of documents that gives them a hard time.
To address these matters, the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has launched a series of pop-up events that will provide face-to-face support to parents who do not have reliable access to the internet or require extra assistance.
Online applications for admission in the 2026 academic year for Grades R, 1 and 8 have officially opened and the department is making significant efforts to ensure all parents can complete the process successfully.
The Department is working hard to ensure that the remaining applicants are able to access the system and submit their children’s applications on time. Minister of Education in the Western Cape, David Maynier, expressed optimism about the 2026 on-time admissions process.
“The Western Cape’s 2026 on-time admissions window is off to a good start, with the parents of 43,727 learners already submitting applications for Grade R, 1 and 8 for next year.
According to Maynier, the WCED will host 125 pop-up events at various shopping malls and schools throughout the province. The events will offer hands-on help for parents struggling with the online system.
Additionally, parents can receive assistance at their local education district offices or directly at the schools to which they wish to apply. This is part of a broader initiative to ensure that all families, regardless of their access to technology, can navigate the admissions process with ease.
Maynier says parents will be required to submit the following certified supporting documents:
- Identification – any one of the following can be submitted:
- Identity document (ID) or birth certificate of the learner;
- Foreign learners: a passport or a copy of parent’s refugee or asylum seeker permit on which the learner’s name should appear;
- If the learner has foreign parents but was born in South Africa: a handwritten
- birth certificate (DHA 19 form); or
- If the learner was not born in South Africa: a passport or a refugee or asylum seeker permit issued in the learner’s name.
- Immunization card or Road to Health chart – applicable to pre-primary and primary schools only.
- Latest official school report or academic report.
- Proof of residence e.g., rates account / lease agreement / an affidavit made at a police station confirming residence.
Parents are encouraged to take advantage of these pop-up resources and ensure their applications are submitted before the April 15 deadline.
