To create a safe place for learners and teachers around schools in the North West province, Education MEC, Viola Motsumi, officially opened the District School Safety Summit at Milner Technical High School.
The summit, which was launched on 1 March 2024, is in response to the growing concerns of safety and security of learners and educators in the Dr Kenneth Kaunda district. According to the department, schools in this particular district have become hotspot areas for criminal activities and disruptive learner behaviour. The province’s South African Police Service (SAPS) is also part and parcel of the initiative to implement effective safety and security measures in schools.
Motsumi said that reported incidents such as gangsterism, bullying, substance abuse, and sexual misconduct in schools, have created a feeling of fear and intimidation to learners and turned schools into unconducive learning environments.
“We are committed to working collaboratively with all stakeholders, including the SAPS, educators, learners, parents, local businesses, and community leaders, to create safe and secure learning environments for all,” Motsumi said.
Two weeks ago, the Eastern Cape Department of Education reported a sexual misconduct incident, where four Grade 8 girl learners were alleged victims of six Grade 12 boy learners. Earlier this year, a 13-year-old learner from Primrose Primary School in Gauteng, shot and injured the school principal and had allegedly planned to shoot two more of his educators.
Councilor Kade Guerrero from the City of Ekurhuleni described the school as a place of safety for those who spend most of their time there. He said that these incidents are getting worse as they are now happening in primary schools.
Gauteng Education MEC, Matome Chiloane said that parents need to assist in disciplining their children. He said that discipline from home makes a difference.
The North West department said it is determined to make sure that all schools in the province are safe and welcoming spaces where learners can thrive.
