Is it Advisable for Former Matrics to go Back to School Full Time? Here’s Two Opinions to Analyze

With numerous options made available for Grade 12 learners to improve their results, some prefer to go back to high school to study full time to obtain their matrics.

According to a High School teacher, Koketso Maubane attending full time classes at your previous high school to improve your matric results is one of the best options. She said that most people are not aware that the process becomes a lot easier when you go back to the same school instead of upgrading part-time at a different institution.

“I would advise most people, young or old, who want to upgrade, to go back and improve their results if they wish to. Most people that I have come across, who upgraded at a different institution, find it difficult to adapt,” she said.

Maubane said that in her experience as a teacher coming back to school full time has helped quite a number of her students. She said that it does not matter how long it has been since you have completed high school.

Meanwhile, another high school teacher, Nkosiyethu Moyo, suggests that going back to repeat matric full time might not make much of a difference as nothing much would have changed. He says it is still the same syllabus, class and stream and he suggests that trying to register at a TVET College might be a good option.

“TVET Colleges offer practical classes for all levels, even for those who drop out of school in Grade 9 because they might not be doing well with a theoretical syllabus. Imagine sitting in the front row of the class, participating and attending extra lessons after school and during weekends, only for you to fail or perform poorly,” he said.

Moyo added that a track record of how you have been performing since the beginning of high school may be one of the things that will influence which option to take in order to improve your matric results. He said that if you have been performing below average then it is not advisable to go back to school full time.
