The month of March sees the commemoration of Human Rights in South Africa. In recognizing its significance, the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) is visiting the Eastern Cape Province to facilitate a series of activities which have a specific focus on education and equality, including highlighting awareness on lack of scholar transport in some areas.

Professor Tshepo Madlingozi, a Commissioner of the SAHRC, is leading the activities taking place and has invited collaboration in raising awareness through participation in an awareness walk in various locations in the province.

“The Commission notes, through complaints, monitoring, and media reports, the absence of scholar transport services leading to adverse consequences such as students dropping out, financial burdens, and undertaking excessive and potentially hazardous journeys to reach their schools,” a media statement read.

Commissioner Madlingozi yesterday presented a synopsis of the SAHRC school uniform report findings and recommendations to Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Basic Education. Other activities include commemorating World Day of Justice where Madlingozi will be a guest lecture, presenting digital literacy and the right to Basic Education.
