FOOD POISONING SCARE AT KZN MATRIC BOOTCAMP

An investigation is underway into the food poisoning that took place at a matric bootcamp in the Umkhanyakude district in the north of KwaZulu-Natal.

Grade 12 learners from Intuthuko Special School Boot Camp complained of stomach cramps on Friday, 21 June 2024. The provincial department of education sought the intervention of the department of health, who then deployed a mobile clinic from Hlabisa Hospital.

According to the education department, the learners have since been treated and are recovering well. It adds that steps will be taken to ensure there is secure and clean food handling at all camps, so such incidents don’t occur.

The camp is one of the many centres set up across the province as part of the learner support programmes for learners in matric. The Department of Basic Education’s (DBE) Director-General Mathanzima Mweli is visiting all the camps to monitor and encourage both learners and their teachers as they prepare for their exams.
