About 15 children have reportedly been swept away by floods close to Efata special school in Mthatha, Eastern Cape.
This as several roads including the R61 from Mthatha to Ngcobo and the N2 to Kokstad near Emakhaphetshwini outside Mthatha have been affected by heavy rains.
Reports also indicate that Wapadsberg Pass along the R61 between Nxuba and Graaff-Reinet has been covered in snow.
The adverse weather conditions which include heavy rains, strong winds, and snowfall, rocked the province since Monday 9th May, and has left a trail of disaster in Mthatha, the OR Tambo, Joe Gqabi, Sarah Baartman Districts and the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality.
Eastern Cape Provincial Government has deployed disaster management teams across affected areas to provide critical support to communities impacted by the destructive weather.
The South African Weather Service issued an Orange Alert Level 6 warning of disruptive snowfall in high-lying regions of the province, potential road closures, flooding, and possible power interruptions.
Motorists have been urged to exercise caution while driving on the wet and slippery roads, while Premier Oscar Mabuyane also calling on drivers to avoid non-essential traveling as well as travelling through flood-prone areas.
“Our disaster teams are on high alert and ready to respond wherever assistance is needed. We urge the public to stay cautious and prioritize safety above all else” said Mabuyane. “We assure residents that the Provincial Government is fully mobilised, coordinating closely with local municipalities and Emergency Services to manage the impact of the weather system and support those affected” Mabuyane added.
