The first day of school did not go as planned for the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education after learners and teachers had to be released early due to the persistent rains.
In a statement released, the department indicated that it had to release learners and teachers early today as a number of schools and communities have been badly affected by the bad weather.
“The Head of Department for the KZN Department of Education has issued a circular to all the schools to close early today due to the weather warning we have received form the weather services. This he directs so that all our teachers and learners can be safe,” Muzi Mahlambi, the Head of Communications at province’s Department of Education said.
In April 2022, the province was ravaged by devastating floods that destroyed about 356 schools, causing delays to schooling and teaching during that academic year. The department of education spent millions on classrooms affected by the floods.
“Based on the experience of April 2022, it is imperative that schools and offices must adhere to specific guidelines in the event of extreme rainfall, wind or any other natural disasters which may threaten the lives of learners, teachers and officials,” the statement added.
